Listening to Singing Bowls - visualising sound
    by Michael Askill

“for the faculty of hearing is beyond
all thought, beyond mind and body.”
from the Surangama Sutra (translated by Charles Luk)

Listening to singing bowls is different to listening to music that has been composed using western or non-western scales to create melodies and harmonies. Singing bowls are not created to fit within the notes of any prescribed scale. When listening to singing bowls, allow yourself to turn of the habitual tendency to hear something as major or minor, happy or sad.
Close your eyes and internally experience the sounds. Visualise the sound of the bowls as gently pulsing, warm and inviting lights. Imagine a single bowl sound as a round pebble dropped into a pool of infinite silence. A second or third bowl sound creates additional ripples that merge with the first to create pulses and flutters. Allow yourself to be immersed in these gentle waves of sound. When two or more singing bowls combine and disperse, leaving the sound of a single bowl, the effect is like gliding through gentle turbulence into a clear blue sky. Follow the vibrations of the bowls into silence.

There is a moment described in many spiritual texts as a moment of great potential, the realisation of the infinite. It may be the moment between breathing in and out, the moment between wakefulness and sleep, the moment between thoughts - or the moment between sound and silence.

    “...in such universal pause
    one’s small self vanishes”
From Shiva’s instructions to Devi on the 112 Ways (translated by Paul Reps

Perfect for 30 minute meditation, qigong, yoga, tai chi etc

NOTE: iPhone speakers will struggle with the complex frequencies and harmonics of the bowls!
